Subways stops can just be like 1x1 train station. Don't necessarily need track.(maybe like water pipes w/ different code??)

Yes, that's my reasoning too.
The subway station would have to be a 1x1-building that has a tunnel section below it just like the small waterpump-buildings have pipes. The subway-tunnels themselves would work like a different type of the water pipes.
I would love to see that in the game.

Anything transporting trains, cars, etc currently uses at least a tile of width along it's length whether above ground or below.
